The City of Melbourne, Florida is a beautiful, harbor city located on east central Florida's Space Coast. Melbourne is about an hour's drive south of the Kennedy Space Center, and 1-1/2 hours due east of Disney World. The City is in the southern portion of Brevard County. Interstate-95 runs through the county from north-to-south. Access roads from the west include the Beachline Expressway (formerly the Beeline) and U.S. 192, which runs through Melbourne to the beaches. Today, the City is approximately 41 square miles in size, with about 75% of that land in use.
The City of Melbourne population was 78,308 as of April 1, 2008, according to the University of Florida Bureau of Economic and Business Research. The population of Melbourne continues to grow at a modest rate. Melbourne offers residents a wide variety of activities, from top notch dining and shopping in its historic downtown area, to fishing and boating along the city’s border which rides along the Indian River. Melbourne is home to prestigious companies including Harris Corporation, DRS Technologies, General Electric, Liberty Aerospace, Northrop Grumman, and Rockwell Collins.
When it comes to healthcare, Melbourne has an excellent reputation for its offerings. The area has three hospitals, day care for senior citizens, hospice, walk-in and urgent care facilities. When it comes to art and culture, Melbourne is on the cusp, and quickly becoming a gathering spot for artists within Florida. Downtown Melbourne is home to the renowned Henegar Center for the Arts, which produces plays, concerts and musicals throughout the year. Also it is impossible to not take notice of the sprawling art scene downtown, due to the gallery scene. Famous artists and bands grace the stage of the Maxwell C. King Center for Arts on a constant basis. Melbourne is also home to the Brevard Symphony Orchestra and the Brevard Zoo.
The Brevard County Manatees (as well as the Washington Nationals during Spring Training) play at Space Coast Stadium, located within Melbourne’s city limits. The Beaches are a short drive across one of the three causeways, making Melbourne a city that truly has it all. Melbourne is home to the prestigious Florida Institute of Technology, Brevard Community College, and satellite campuses of other fine colleges and universities. As far as elementary and secondary education, residents have wonderful schools, both public and private, available within the city. Melbourne has its own airport, as well and bus and train stations allowing for easy travel to destinations nationwide.
