Fun Fact: The town was formally recognized December 24, 1883, when the U.S. Government established a post office. Mail was delivered by sailboat.
With a population estimated at just under 3,000, the City of Malabar is just under 5 miles south of Palm Bay, along the Indian River Lagoon. Malabar is a step back in time, and many of the daily observations you’ll see around town are reminiscent of the famed Highwayman Paintings produced in the mid-twentyith century. Malabar and neighboring Grant, were the setting for many of these sought after paintings, which depict swaying palm trees, remarkable sunsets over the river, and the flora native to the area.
In 1883, The Town of Malabar got its first official Post Office and name, when R. A. Ward was named Postmaster by President Chester A. Arthur. Two Times a week, the boat that traveled down the Intracoastal waterway from Jacksonville would deliver the mail to the palmetto shack post office along the riverbank at Malabar. The mail was dumped on the counter for the population of 25 to shuffle through.
With the coming of the railroad in 1893 the mail boat was no longer needed. To this day, Malabar exudes a relaxed, riverside nostalgia from the hustle and bustle of neighboring Palm Bay.
